The Gayatri Mantra is a sacred chant and prayer that has many meanings and interpretations:

Unity in creation
The Gayatri Mantra demonstrates the unity that exists behind the many forms of creation.

Prayer for wisdom

The Gayatri Mantra is a prayer for enlightenment and wisdom that asks for divine light to illuminate the practitioner’s intellect.

Meditation
The Gayatri Mantra is a set of sounds used by meditators to achieve a higher state of consciousness.
Spiritual awakening
The Gayatri Mantra is believed to foster a sense of connection with the universe and higher self, and to lead to spiritual awakening.

Removal of negativity

Chanting the Gayatri Mantra is believed to remove negativity, calm the mind, and reduce stress and anxiety.

Purification
Regular practice of the Gayatri Mantra is believed to purify the mind and spirit.

Some translations of the Gayatri Mantra include: 

“We meditate on the glory of the Creator, who has created the Universe, who is worthy of Worship, who is the embodiment of Knowledge and Light, who is the remover of all Sin and Ignorance, may He enlighten our Intellect”

“We meditate on the glory of that Being who has produced this universe; may She enlighten our minds”

“Let us meditate on that excellent glory of the divine vivifying Sun, May he enlighten our understandings”

The Gayatri Mantra is mentioned in the Upanishads as a ritual and in the Bhagavad Gita as a divine poem.

Here is a literal translation:

The Gayatri Mantra is a Sanskrit prayer that has the following literal translations for its words:

Om: The sacred syllable, primeval sound, and pervades the Bhu Loka, Bhuvar Loka, and Swar Loka
Bhur: The physical body or realm
Bhuvah: The life force or mental realm
Svaha: The soul or spiritual realm
Tat: That (God)
Savitur: Of Savitṛ (Sun, Creator, source of all life)
Vareṇyam: Adore, venerable
Bhargo: Splendor, effulgence, divine light
Devasya: Supreme Lord
Dhīmahi: May we meditate
Dhiyo: Buddhi (intellect)
Yo: May this light
Naḥ: Our
Prachodayāt: Illumine / inspire

The general meaning of the mantra is to ask the Gayatri goddess for a light that removes sin and to pray that this light helps to get out of darkness and walk towards truth.
